Most of you reading this will probably want to know first of all if Ultimate exists in France, and if it does, how does one get in touch with the right people? To answer your first question I can tell you that Ultimate players have been going `ho' and scraping hips on the pitches of France for quite some time. As an American, perhaps I am not the best suited to write this note on Ultimate in France, but given the language barrier and the relatively few numbers of Internet users in France, I have decided to write just a few words.

I recently reread Peter Wyngaard's letter, memo (whatever you want to call it) which he wrote over two years ago, and is consequently being replaced by this one, before he left France to return to the U.S. I should probably say his `visit' back to the U.S. because I think he would like to consider Europe his Ultimate home. He made a heap of friends all over Europe in the short period of time that he was here, and he made a lasting impression on the `up and coming' French players because of his all-out style of play. I also think he was a good example of how to completely immerse oneself into the French and International Ultimate culture which exists in Europe.

But I am swaying off course. We now know that Ultimate exists in France, but how does one get to play, either in a tournament or just practice? I would first suggest calling any of the team contacts in the city you will either be visiting or living in. Like most everything in France, if it exists at all, it's got to be in Paris. This is true given that 10 of the 17 clubs in France can be found in the Paris metropolitan area. If you are staying in Paris, the team which has earned the reputation of harboring foreigners is Invalid's de Paris. A team composite which consists of French, American, British, Canadian and Norwegian players. Given an average age of just under 30, the Invalid's have a bit more experience than the other teams, but experience won't run you around the pitch.

The French have sent several teams to international level tournaments, including previous World championships, but 1994 was a remarkable year for the youngsters from Stain, a suburb just outside of Paris. Without a coach and very little money, the guys from Stain put together a formidable national team, which made a respectable appearance at the 1994 Worlds in Colchester. But the real jewel in France is the women's team, which, albeit very young as well, makes a remarkable showing each year in the international indoor tournaments, including this years European Indoor Championships.

This year France is hosting the European Club Championships for the first time in Fontenay Le Comte, roughly four hours west of Paris. Raoul de Vaucelles, whose name is listed above, is one of the principal organisers, and can be contacted directly if you have any questions regarding this tournament to be held between 26 August-2 September.

I am undoubtedly neglecting the other teams throughout France, but if you read French and you want more information you can contact the French Federation of Flying Disc for their periodical bulletin "Infodisc" at the following address and number:
